Rightshifting

Rightshifting is a business change programme designed to transform the IT-to-business relationship. It applies the principles of Lean systems thinking to deliver measureable improvements in the value delivered from software intensive systems to the business customer, the consumer, and the tax-payer.

The Case for Rightshifting

There are few - if any - businesses around today which do not rely on software-intensive systems for the development and delivery of products and services.

A recent report by the CBI found levels of customer and user satisfaction with the performance of business software to be very low. Company executives consider it costs too much. Project performance is poor. The software professionals are a long way from contributing as much as they could to the global economic recovery, and to meeting the challenge of delivering a green and sustainable future business model.

At SMS, we are seeking opportunities to help public and private sector organisations turn that around. Quickly. Effectively. Once for all.

This graph is based on data from the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group. ` It represents a composite of data measuring how effective software intensive business systems are at achieving business goals - whether those goals relate to productivity, time to market, quality or customer satisfaction.

It shows that 80% of all organisations worldwide WASTE 80% of the effort expended on software intensive systems.

PRODUCTIVITY in the organisations at the right-hand end of the scale is TEN TIMES that of the average organisation.

The COST per unit of software delivered to an organisation at Level 1 is EIGHT TIMES MORE than the unit cost for an organisation achieving Level 4.

A modest shift up the performance scale means a 75% reduction in whole-life costs.

Diagnosing the problem

We know a “one size fits all” approach to improving performance doesn’t work. The first step in Rightshifting your organisation is to identify where you are on the Rightshifting scale, and what benefits you are seeking to achieve.

SMS offers public and private sector organisations, including extended value chains, a unique insight into how to assess and improve the whole-life performance of software-intensive systems. We are dedicated to rightshifting the performance of outsourced services, along with those managed in-house, by removing wasted effort and building lean, value-focused processes. We apply evidence-based methods and benchmarks of value delivered to coach business people and technologists to work as partners.

It takes one consultation to diagnose the problem and begin to appreciate the "size of the prize" for your business. It could be the most valuable working day your company ever invested in.
