GAP Analysis is a technique which uncovers any shortfall in some process or characteristic. It is done against a template or model.
The technique is often used when investigating an organisation to discover where to invest effort in improvement. It compares the characteristics of an organisation's operations against an appropriate model. GAP Analysis highlights those areas where the requirements of the model are not fully realised and details the changes necessary.
The required changes indicate the gap that exists between the organisation's current operations and the desired state and which areas are likely to be the most responsive to improvement efforts. The business sponsors can then judge which areas, when improved, would be the most beneficial to the organisation.
